How it works

From idea to finished material

You don't need to know how a production works technically – that's what the team is for. These five steps show you what to expect.

  1. Request

You briefly describe what you need: format, occasion, rough timeframe. An email or the request form is enough. We get back to you and clarify whether the lab has the right setup for your project.

  2. Briefing

Together we go through the details: goal, audience, the result you want, recording location, the people involved. This is where we decide which rooms, which equipment and how much support make sense. The clearer the briefing, the smoother the shoot day.

  3. Production

Recording in the studio or on location. Cameras, lighting and sound are set up, the team supports you during setup and throughout the recording. You focus on the content – we keep the technology under control.

  4. Editing & post-production

The raw footage becomes a finished piece: editing, sound work, colour grading, graphics. You can do this yourself or work with support – depending on how much you want to learn and take on yourself.

  5. Delivery

The result is output in the right format: a file for web and social, a stream for a live audience, a recording for the archive. We make sure the material works where it's meant to end up.

Before you ask: here's how we're connected to the CIC at HWR Berlin, and what to expect when we support your production.

Frequently asked

How is the lab connected to the CIC at HWR Berlin?

The Media Lab is part of the Startup Incubator Berlin, the entrepreneurship center of HWR Berlin, and sits on campus at the CIC. Use is arranged through a request to the lab team; we coordinate rooms and gear on site.

Will I get support during the production?

Yes. We brief you on the equipment beforehand, and on request we accompany the recording, shoot or stream. You don't have to be a pro – what matters is that you know what you want to tell. We'll work through the rest together.

What does it cost to use?

Terms are arranged individually and on request, depending on the project, its scope and your affiliation. Describe your project and we'll tell you what's possible.

How much lead time do I need?

The earlier you ask, the easier it is to plan – especially for live productions and dates with several people involved. Short-notice requests are welcome too; we'll let you know directly whether it works.

A few notes

  • Think ahead about what it's about, who should see it and when you need it – that makes the briefing easier.
  • Bring your own content such as logos, slides or music, and make sure you hold the necessary rights.
  • For recordings involving people you'll need their consent – we'll help you remember it.
  • Mobile gear is loaned out and comes back complete; we check its condition together beforehand.
