Girls’ Day at the Startup Incubator Berlin

This year, the Startup Incubator Berlin, the founding center of HWR Berlin, is once again hosting a Girls’ Day!

This year’s theme is:

How do I become an entrepreneur & how does prototyping work via 3D scan & printing?

After the welcome, we’ll kick things off with a Design Thinking workshop. Your task will be to develop a prototype. The theme is: “Design a phone holder” (one that doesn’t exist yet). Afterwards, you will “produce” your product in clay in our workshop and learn the basics of 3D scanning and 3D printing. You will also find out how to best plan the founding of your own company and have the opportunity to meet our female founders from the program.

We will send your clay product to you later as a 3D print. This will take approximately 4 weeks.

We have 8 spots available for participants aged 14 and up. Register at:

We look forward to a productive day.

On October 11th and 12th we joined the deGut – German Founders’ and Entrepreneurship Days trade fair, a comprehensive platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and for gaining insights on how to found a business. A big part of the program during this both days was dedicated to female entrepreneurship and empowerment.

This year we were very fortunate since we had the possibility to exhibit together with Grace Accelerator and avant now since we are the three selected incubators that are able to offer the Berlin Startup Scholarship Women. The scholarships are intended to support around 60 female founders. They will receive funding of up to 2,200 euros per month /per person for 9 months (at the Startup Incubator Berlin, duration differs) during the start-up phase.

Katrin Jahnke from SIB had the honor to receive the official grant notice personally from our Senator for Economic Affairs Franziska Giffey on stage and two of our female founders who just joined the program, Daria Trints with Periodly and Katharina Schultz-Ebert with Unite had the chance to pitch their startup idea with great support from the female founders community from the SIB and the whole ecosystem!

We are very proud and thankful that we are able to empower future female founders and non-binary persons with such a program and more to come.

Find here all the details for the application for the 2nd upcoming batch, starting March 2025, for the Belrin Startup Scholarship Women at the Startup Incubator Berlin.

A dreamy view of greenery, a tiny little house, a break from the hectic big-city life – who hasn’t dreamed of a holiday like that, or even of permanently owning such an idyllic retreat?

Today we meet Javier, one of the founders of Cabin Experience, who wants to make this dream a reality for many people. During our video call, his business partner Charles joins in, laughing as he notes that the stunning view on the Cabin Experience website is of course an ideal image of conscious living in nature. But Javier and Charles are well on their way to turning this ideal into reality and making it accessible to their customers.

But let’s start from the beginning: in mid-2019, the two joined the Startup Incubator Berlin, winning first prize in the audience vote at the Make It Lean Contest. Their concept was so compelling to us that they were accepted into the Startup Now program and ultimately successfully applied for the Berlin Startup Scholarship starting in January 2020.

Their vision is to revolutionize tourism – to unite people and nature in a minimalist way. They plan to do this through the sale of tiny houses, with future owners also being able to find suitable land to place them on through Cabin Experience. In addition, the platform will also facilitate the rental of the tiny houses during the times when they are not being used by the owners themselves.

That is the future. As a first step, they are now entering the market with a more streamlined tiny house designed for garden use. This model is already being produced in Austria. You can think of it as an exclusive wooden tent – ideal for your own property and the occasional overnight guest. The broader concept will be implemented in stages over the medium term, funded by the initial revenue generated from this model.

With their entry into the market, their program with us has now come to an end, and we ask about their impressions and experiences during their exciting and eventful time at the SIB. For Javier, the detailed coaching was particularly important, as they initially had a complex and wide-ranging idea that they were able to streamline thanks to the Lean methodology. From Charles’s perspective, the targeted advice on the right business structure and the founding process itself was a great help.

For both founders, the international atmosphere at the Startup Incubator Berlin was also important – to which they themselves contributed, as Javier is from Spain and Charles from France. Why did they found their company in Berlin? Because it offers the best conditions for startups to tap into an international market from here. For example, the world’s largest tourism trade fair takes place here, even if a great deal is currently changing in this industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From Javier and Charles’s perspective, however, their vision of sustainable, regional, and minimalist travel offers great opportunities precisely in these times.

And so we find ourselves daydreaming once again about a beautiful tiny house with a view out into open nature. With their positive energy and motivation, the two founders have inspired and won us over – we wish Javier and Charles every success with their business idea!

HWR Berlin as the only Berlin university in the “Regional Networking” funding focus among winners of the BMWi competition EXIST. Major success for Startup Incubator Berlin and Entrepreneurship Education

The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) will receive two million euros over the next four years to strategically expand its startup support programs. 220 universities and universities of applied sciences from all federal states had participated in the funding competition of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). HWR Berlin entered with its concept titled “Boosting Startups @ HWR Berlin” in the “Regional Networking” category.

“The strong performance of universities of applied sciences in the funding competition to expand their startup centers underlines once again how much the federal government relies on practice-oriented approaches when it comes to startups and startup support,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin. “Being counted among the winners is both recognition and motivation. We are very pleased to have been the only Berlin university to succeed in the funding line for advanced startup universities, and we will use the funding to further expand our offerings,” says Zaby.

The goal is to strengthen the startup culture in the capital region by integrating HWR Berlin with players in the regional startup ecosystem and international partner universities. Christian Gurol, head of Startup Incubator Berlin, the startup center of HWR Berlin, considers the team and the exchange between startups to be key success factors. “With our startup center, we provide the platform and broad-based, intensive support so that startup enthusiasts become teams, ideas become market-ready projects, and companies are founded,” he explains.

The special feature of this startup hub, with locations at Campus Schöneberg and at the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt, is that the teams work according to the Lean Startup method. At its core, this is about involving potential customers early on in order to align the development of products and services closely with market needs from the very beginning. The strategy is paying off: approximately 95 percent of startups establish limited liability companies after the “Berlin Startup Scholarship” and become economic actors themselves. “Startups are of high strategic importance for Germany as a business location: they drive innovation, are the engine of structural change, and create the jobs of the future,” emphasized Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier upon announcing the winners of the EXIST-Potentiale funding competition.

In the 2018 Startup Radar of the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany, the Berlin School of Economics and Law emerged as one of the best universities of applied sciences in Germany. With the funds from the Federal Ministry, it can continue and further develop its successful startup support, and draw inspiration as a member of the network of successful German startup universities. HWR Berlin is focusing on four priorities for strategic expansion:

• HWR Berlin Startup Boosters: a regional network that directly benefits the supported startups
• Spin-off of HWR Berlin for commercial exploitation, in order to offer commercial activities on a demand-oriented basis
• Open Startup Academy: a regional network that ensures the institutionalized integration of HWR Berlin in the regional startup ecosystem
• International Startup Community: knowledge and people transfer between partner universities to support the regional network.

“We create the framework conditions under which creative startup teams can develop well together with established companies, and thus offer a crystallization point for knowledge transfer between academia and industry,” says Zaby.
