At the start of 2022, the Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB) opened its doors on January 27 to a virtual marketplace of new business ideas. More than 30 guests took a look behind the scenes of the young companies and answered their questions from a customer perspective. Gathering this perspective (UX for User Experience = user perception) is an essential part of the Lean Startup Method, with which the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law supports young startups. The focus is on product development in rapid cycles, with low resource requirements and regular customer feedback, in order to quickly bring a new offering to market readiness.

At the online event in January, seven teams showcased their current stage of development: Cheery offers a platform that rewards sustainable consumer behavior, and the founding team of cleverlohn wants to simplify payroll processing for micro and small businesses. Sittery creates a marketplace for trustworthy childcare, Trueffles presented its new, intuitive internet research tool, and neXpen is currently expanding its range of intuitive learning tools.

Teams from outside the SIB also participated: Qequal demonstrated a platform connecting beauty and wellness providers with their queer, transsexual, and non-binary clientele. The portal MehrPflegeGeld is designed to help people easily determine their entitlement to a care budget without complicated bureaucracy.

UX testing at the Startup Incubator Berlin takes place regularly on the last Thursday of the month from 4:00 PM, information and registration: https://www.startup-incubator.berlin/events/

Interested teams from outside the SIB can register at: gruendungszentrum@hwr-berlin.de

Startup Incubator Berlin under new leadership.

The founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law now has a dual leadership with Marvin Göldner and Matthias Grytzka. The areas of entrepreneurship, startup support, and technology transfer are being strengthened.

Berlin, January 28, 2022. With Marvin Göldner and Matthias Grytzka, two experienced startup coaches are taking over the leadership of the Startup Incubator Berlin at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin). Since January 2022, they have been responsible for the entire operational management of the founding center, which provides entrepreneurship-minded students with the framework, networks, and funding they need to develop their ideas through to market-ready prototypes.

The strategic concept development and funding acquisition for HWR Berlin will also be strengthened, with the aim of further advancing HWR Berlin’s profile as an entrepreneurial university.

Marvin Göldner

“I personally prepared a startup at an incubator in Munich and know from my own experience what is important for startups in the early stage. I am excited about the opportunities we can offer to those interested in founding a company and startup teams at the SIB. I look forward to further developing the university’s founding center and unlocking new growth potential with our great team. As an Innovation & Strategy Developer, I want to optimize coaching methods so that young startups at the SIB can reach the market faster.”

Matthias Grytzka

“I have been working at the SIB for almost five years and helped shape the HWR founding center at the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin in Siemensstadt. We provide young startup teams with an attractive co-working space, a Design Thinking Lab, and a lab for developing app applications, a prototyping workshop, and above all coaching and financial support. That is simply wonderful. I am looking forward to the ever-new creative startup teams for whose success we are laying the foundation here. Innovation is not a coincidence.”

The Startup Incubator Berlin, the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law, is a workshop and experimentation space for those interested in starting a business. Here, ideas, concepts, and the development of prototypes are supported, and founders and potential business partners are connected. It is a place of creativity, encounter, and exchange. With the Berlin Startup Scholarship and the EXIST scholarship program, founders are financially supported. The incubator is aimed at everyone who is just at the beginning of their founding idea as well as those who are already in the active founding phase.

On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, the virtual workshop on the topic of “Cyber Security in Israel” took place as the first joint event between ELNET e.V. Germany and Departments 1 and 5 of HWR Berlin.

On the occasion of Cyber Security Month — November — and the newly established collaboration with ELNET e.V. Germany, the Startup Incubator Berlin, Department 1 and Department 5 of the Berlin School of Economics and Law jointly organized a workshop on the highly relevant topic of “Cyber Security.”

Israel is considered one of the world’s leading countries when it comes to producing new startups and investments in the cyber security market. Gilad Zinger (YYM Ventures) and Shahar Alon (Checkmarx) are experts in this field and were invited as guest speakers to report live from Israel on their experiences and the latest developments in the area of cyber security.

During the 1.5-hour event, they provided exciting insights into their companies and answered questions from participants. Data is the gold of the digital age, as they say. The use, dissemination, and storage of sensitive digital data and information is constantly increasing. This also raises the demand for cyber security measures. States, companies, and individuals alike are looking for solutions to better protect themselves against hacker attacks and data breaches. Others, however, do not see themselves as targets of such attacks.

“Many people think that they could not be a victim of Cyber Security.”, says Gilad Zinger, Investment Director – Cyber Security SME at YYM Ventures and guest speaker at our workshop. He reports on his experiences with people who underestimate the risk and assume their personal data would be too uninteresting for hackers. But what happens when 100, 1,000, or even millions of people think this way?

“We are more digitized than any other generation and we won’t stop being digitized. That is why there will be no stop of stealing data.” (Gilad Zinger)

The “stealing of data” goes far beyond electronic information and money, Zinger notes, and plays a video showing a woman who, through clever questioning over the phone, gains access to the personal data of her alleged husband. She needs only a few minutes to gain access to a stranger’s bank account. “You don’t have to have a computer to steal data.” (Zinger).

In his presentation, Gilad Zinger goes on to discuss the reasons and individuals who may be behind a cyber attack, various techniques and processes, as well as solutions for protecting against attacks. Many of his remarks give pause for thought. When asked by a participant about protection through anti-virus programs, Zinger smiles and responds: “The virus is more sophisticated than anti-virus. And the anti-virus program also collects data…”

Shahar Alon expands and complements with insights into the Israeli startup Checkmarx in his presentation, and speaks about the legal as well as technical aspects of cyber security. Both illustrate how important the further development of the cyber security market is and how much potential it still holds.

At the close of the 90-minute event, the experts, Zinger and Alon, once again pointed to the significance of all of this for the future of our society. Gilad Zinger uses the example of the “Smart City” — as a concept of a city or municipality that faces the challenges of digitalization and new technologies, embraces and interconnects them, for more sustainable and integrated urban development.

The success of such concepts is built on people’s trust in the security of their data. If people are afraid of losing their privacy and do not believe their data is secure, such promising projects as the “Smart City” will ultimately fail, says Zinger.

Following the event, it can be noted that the cyber security market still offers many opportunities for new ideas and innovations, particularly here in Germany. Many open questions are still searching for suitable answers and solutions.

In total, nearly 70 participants listened to the exciting topics presented by the Israeli cyber security experts and asked numerous questions. The event was moderated by Marvin Göldner, Head of Startup Coaches, from the premises of the HWR’s founding center, the Startup Incubator Berlin. Here too, the newest cyber security startups from HWR could find a home in the future and develop their ideas. So what are you waiting for…?

For the fourth consecutive time, the Startup Incubator Berlin (SIB) is presenting awards for innovative startup ideas.
Make It Lean” is the motto of the competition, as the so-called Lean Startup method is to be applied throughout the development process from idea to prototype, in order to quickly achieve market readiness for the new offering.

Prize money of over 13,000 euros is up for grabs — the three main prizes are determined by a large online public vote, and additional special prizes are awarded by an expert jury. This gives young startups the opportunity to reach a broad audience and even potential investors early on with their founding idea. The jury also includes business angels and the competition’s industry partners.

Most recently, over 30 young startups had applied, and some of these competition teams were subsequently able to qualify for the SIB’s funding programs and bring their business ideas to life there. For other startups, the “Make It Lean Contest” led to initial pilot projects with sponsors. Even in the run-up to the competition, aspiring founders receive comprehensive knowledge and skills; through various workshops and networking events, interested parties also have the opportunity to receive expert feedback and individual coaching.

The prize money is once again funded by sponsors from Berlin’s business community and the startup scene, who are represented on the expert jury and also support the participating teams as advisors on content matters. Sponsors have a variety of individual presentation opportunities across all competition phases: From the kick-off in September 2021 to the festive award ceremony in February 2022 and beyond, they can communicate their commitment to entrepreneurship and the startup economy in a highly visible way.

As in the previous year, the competition will be accompanied by intensive social media communication and supported by a regional poster campaign during the voting phase. The strong public interest was clearly visible on the Startup Incubator Berlin website: Over 170,000 visitors used it to learn about the competition entries, which were submitted in the form of short pitch videos. In the online voting, over 93,000 votes were ultimately cast, determining the winning teams. Here is a look back at the 2020/21 Contest!

Interested sponsors of the “Make It Lean Contest 2021/22” are warmly invited to contact us regarding a partnership by 31 July 2021: Sandra Thumm

“Build, Measure, Learn” – according to Eric Ries, the mantra for successful startups. The three buzzwords were the inspiration for our talented colleague Falko, who together with his band Yuri & Neil turned them into a catchy song and a funny video.

“Remember what Eric said…” goes the lyrics. Silicon Valley entrepreneur and author Ries co-founded the Lean Startup methodology, which is the most important guiding principle for us at Startup Incubator Berlin. Taking a “lean” approach to founding a startup means advancing the development of a new business idea with minimal resource requirements, in short cycles and with regular customer feedback, in order to quickly reach a market-ready offering. According to Ries, these continuous phases of development, validation, and learning (“Build, Measure, Learn”) ensure success. His book The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses was published in 2011.

Falko has been active as the singer of Yuri & Neil since 2014; the band’s name is made up of the first names of the two space pioneers Yuri Gagarin and Neil Armstrong. In 2017, the five musicians recorded the single Dolphin, and the music video reached a million viewers in a short time. Appearances and interviews on German television followed (including ZDF, RBB, RTL2), as well as a record deal with a major label. At Startup Incubator Berlin, Falko works as a startup coach and is responsible for organizing our prototyping labs, and he oversees our newest format “JumpStart“!

We are quite certain that “Build, Measure, Learn (The Lean Band)” will also become an earworm in no time — not just in the startup scene! Listen and see for yourself: the latest work by Yuri & Neil.

For sharing, replaying, and saving – the song is also available here on all major music platforms.

Bearcover supports nursing home staff with robots during nightly routine checks and monitoring tasks. Bearcover’s robots operate in corridors and can perform basic health and movement checks — without entering residents’ rooms. Staff can then prioritize care based on real-time requirements. This allows robots to maximize the time caregivers spend with residents. Staff know where they are needed next and do not have to worry about missing something.

MySecondEar combines the benefits of the digital age with the traditional hearing care professional’s craft: consultations as well as the initial fitting and further fine-tuning of hearing aids are handled entirely online — conveniently, flexibly, and independently of the customer’s current location. Hearing aids are delivered to the door, eliminating the need for time-consuming appointments at a local specialist store. MySecondEar passes the cost savings achieved through digital technology and optimized processes directly on to its customers.

At the Make It Lean Contest 2020/21 there was something special this year:
Due to the very close vote between the two top-placed teams in the “Lean” category, the jury recommended awarding two special prizes this year as an exception. The Startup Incubator was happy to follow this recommendation and is awarding both prizes to teams that devoted themselves to a highly relevant social challenge — one with software, the other with hardware — and demonstrated their methodological approach in the best possible way.

One of these winners is the team from Novaheal. For their idea of a learning app specifically for nursing education and preparation for a successful nursing exam, which combines proven learning methods with modern AI-supported learning analytics, they received €1,500 and the distinction of the special “Lean” prize. How did they come to participate and develop their solution, and what’s next for the founders? We asked them…

How did you become aware of the Make It Lean Contest?

We came across the Make It Lean Contest on LinkedIn, as I (Turan) have someone in my network who had shared a post about the competition. So it was more of a happy coincidence for us.

How and when did you come together as a startup team?

Samuel and Turan have been close friends since their school days, and Valentin and Samuel met in 2018 during their human medicine studies and quickly realized that both had nearly identical ideas about a “modern complement to nursing education.”

How did you come across the problem you want to solve with your founding idea?

Valentin and Samuel are both trained healthcare and nursing professionals and independently noticed during their training that many areas of the program could be improved. These include, for example, appropriate digital learning resources, engaging and interconnected learning content that truly bridges the gap between theory and practice, practical engagement with professional policy and ethics, and so on. In short, many things that ultimately help develop a professional nursing identity and learn this incredibly enriching profession.

What is your most important goal in the next 3 months?

We are fortunately currently receiving the EXIST founder’s grant and can keep ourselves afloat. However, we still need capital for our product development, so we are actively looking around. We are looking for someone who shares our vision with Novaheal and feels the same drive to make an impact.

Who would you like to have a coffee or tea with? Why?

A classic question — Ranga Yogeshwar and the Dalai Lama. The way Mr. Yogeshwar explains scientific topics is simply enjoyable, and our co-founder Sam would love to ask the Dalai Lama a few things.

Juriverse has won third place in the Make It Lean Contest 2020/21 and a prize of €2,000!
Their idea? A platform for free learning materials in law school that students need to optimally prepare for exams and with which authors can earn money.
Juriverse identified a problem in their environment, tackled it, and want to solve it — this is exactly the kind of mentality we love to support, including through our Startup Now Programme! But how did it all come about, and what else does the Juriverse team have planned? We asked them…

1) How did you find out about the Make It Lean Contest?
We became aware of the Startup Incubator Berlin through our consideration of applying for the Berlin Startup Scholarship. That’s where we then also discovered the Make It Lean Contest.

2) How and when did you come together as a startup team?
Marvin and Laura have known each other since school. Lucca became a good friend and is now a co-founder through CODE University. So we have all known each other for several years and make a strong team. We also bring together the necessary skills. Laura takes care of legal topics and operations, Lucca handles the technical side, and Marvin looks after product management. We are additionally supported by great legal professionals from across Germany and a network from the startup industry.

3) How did you come across the problem that you want to solve with your startup idea?
Laura is herself a law student, so we have our user persona right within the team. When she told us one day about her challenges in law school, we took a closer look at the topic and saw great potential for innovation there. In the meantime, user interviews with law students and conversations with professors have confirmed that there is indeed room for improvement in this area.

4) What is your most important goal in the next 3 months?
To make law school less daunting and stressful for law students through our initiatives and materials. In law school, it’s not just about access to the right materials. Above all, it’s about conveying knowledge of how students need to work with the relevant materials — combined with feedback on students’ own solutions.

5) Who would you like to have a coffee or tea with? Why?
With investors who ideally have a legal background, or lawyers who are looking for a passion project and want to support it.
