A dreamy view of greenery, a tiny little house, a break from the hectic big-city life – who hasn’t dreamed of a holiday like that, or even of permanently owning such an idyllic retreat?

Today we meet Javier, one of the founders of Cabin Experience, who wants to make this dream a reality for many people. During our video call, his business partner Charles joins in, laughing as he notes that the stunning view on the Cabin Experience website is of course an ideal image of conscious living in nature. But Javier and Charles are well on their way to turning this ideal into reality and making it accessible to their customers.

But let’s start from the beginning: in mid-2019, the two joined the Startup Incubator Berlin, winning first prize in the audience vote at the Make It Lean Contest. Their concept was so compelling to us that they were accepted into the Startup Now program and ultimately successfully applied for the Berlin Startup Scholarship starting in January 2020.

Their vision is to revolutionize tourism – to unite people and nature in a minimalist way. They plan to do this through the sale of tiny houses, with future owners also being able to find suitable land to place them on through Cabin Experience. In addition, the platform will also facilitate the rental of the tiny houses during the times when they are not being used by the owners themselves.

That is the future. As a first step, they are now entering the market with a more streamlined tiny house designed for garden use. This model is already being produced in Austria. You can think of it as an exclusive wooden tent – ideal for your own property and the occasional overnight guest. The broader concept will be implemented in stages over the medium term, funded by the initial revenue generated from this model.

With their entry into the market, their program with us has now come to an end, and we ask about their impressions and experiences during their exciting and eventful time at the SIB. For Javier, the detailed coaching was particularly important, as they initially had a complex and wide-ranging idea that they were able to streamline thanks to the Lean methodology. From Charles’s perspective, the targeted advice on the right business structure and the founding process itself was a great help.

For both founders, the international atmosphere at the Startup Incubator Berlin was also important – to which they themselves contributed, as Javier is from Spain and Charles from France. Why did they found their company in Berlin? Because it offers the best conditions for startups to tap into an international market from here. For example, the world’s largest tourism trade fair takes place here, even if a great deal is currently changing in this industry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From Javier and Charles’s perspective, however, their vision of sustainable, regional, and minimalist travel offers great opportunities precisely in these times.

And so we find ourselves daydreaming once again about a beautiful tiny house with a view out into open nature. With their positive energy and motivation, the two founders have inspired and won us over – we wish Javier and Charles every success with their business idea!

SIB Startups Present Their Founding Ideas to Business Angels

The BACB (Business Angels Club Berlin-Brandenburg e.V.) organized an exclusive pitch day with selected startup teams from the SIB (Startup Incubator Berlin). The startups had the opportunity to present the advanced status of their founding ideas to potential investors and face the critical questions of 20 attending business angels from the region.

The BACB supports young companies with experience, contacts, and capital. For its members, the pitch day is an excellent opportunity to get to know founding teams at an early stage and, in the event of an engagement, to jointly develop their business idea further. Jesse Hartinger, Managing Director of the BACB: “Universities have always been places with bright minds and innovative ideas. For our business angels, exchanging ideas with the founders of the SIB is a true highlight in the annual calendar. In just five minutes, the startups must present their concept convincingly. Afterwards, they receive valuable feedback from experienced entrepreneurs – a first reality check! We are convinced that sustainable and innovative companies in Berlin can only be built together.”

At the SIB Startup Incubator Berlin, the founding center of the Berlin School of Economics and Law, founding ideas are developed to market readiness. The focus is on the Lean Startup method as a planning tool during the pre-founding and founding phases. Christian Gurol, Head of the Startup Incubator Berlin: “The special feature of this method is working on the business idea in recurring development cycles – build-measure-learn – with as little effort as possible. In applying the lean methodology, the founders at the Startup Incubator Berlin are also supported through targeted coaching and regular milestone meetings.”

At the pitch day on June 16, 2020, the following SIB startups presented their companies:

Easy Cook Asia – Provider of authentic Asian food cooking kits, delivering prepared ingredients and recipes with interesting food stories

Careloop – Online platform for connecting qualified nursing staff from abroad with clinics and care facilities in Germany

Thing – Application of AI and robotics for the construction of automated care solutions for elderly persons

Bloom Health – Online platform for forming patient communities around clinical research projects

My Second Ear – Digital hearing care specialist that modernizes and innovates customer interaction around the purchase and fitting of hearing aids

Rvolt – Development of value-added services to provide customers with transparency about their energy consumption and to reduce their CO2 footprint

The keen interest in the event demonstrates that business angels are willing to invest in innovative business models even during times of crisis. Both sides expressed great satisfaction with this cooperation, and since the event, further direct contacts between angels and startups have been established.

HWR Berlin as the only Berlin university in the “Regional Networking” funding focus among winners of the BMWi competition EXIST. Major success for Startup Incubator Berlin and Entrepreneurship Education

The Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) will receive two million euros over the next four years to strategically expand its startup support programs. 220 universities and universities of applied sciences from all federal states had participated in the funding competition of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi). HWR Berlin entered with its concept titled “Boosting Startups @ HWR Berlin” in the “Regional Networking” category.

“The strong performance of universities of applied sciences in the funding competition to expand their startup centers underlines once again how much the federal government relies on practice-oriented approaches when it comes to startups and startup support,” says Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, President of HWR Berlin. “Being counted among the winners is both recognition and motivation. We are very pleased to have been the only Berlin university to succeed in the funding line for advanced startup universities, and we will use the funding to further expand our offerings,” says Zaby.

The goal is to strengthen the startup culture in the capital region by integrating HWR Berlin with players in the regional startup ecosystem and international partner universities. Christian Gurol, head of Startup Incubator Berlin, the startup center of HWR Berlin, considers the team and the exchange between startups to be key success factors. “With our startup center, we provide the platform and broad-based, intensive support so that startup enthusiasts become teams, ideas become market-ready projects, and companies are founded,” he explains.

The special feature of this startup hub, with locations at Campus Schöneberg and at the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt, is that the teams work according to the Lean Startup method. At its core, this is about involving potential customers early on in order to align the development of products and services closely with market needs from the very beginning. The strategy is paying off: approximately 95 percent of startups establish limited liability companies after the “Berlin Startup Scholarship” and become economic actors themselves. “Startups are of high strategic importance for Germany as a business location: they drive innovation, are the engine of structural change, and create the jobs of the future,” emphasized Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier upon announcing the winners of the EXIST-Potentiale funding competition.

In the 2018 Startup Radar of the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany, the Berlin School of Economics and Law emerged as one of the best universities of applied sciences in Germany. With the funds from the Federal Ministry, it can continue and further develop its successful startup support, and draw inspiration as a member of the network of successful German startup universities. HWR Berlin is focusing on four priorities for strategic expansion:

• HWR Berlin Startup Boosters: a regional network that directly benefits the supported startups
• Spin-off of HWR Berlin for commercial exploitation, in order to offer commercial activities on a demand-oriented basis
• Open Startup Academy: a regional network that ensures the institutionalized integration of HWR Berlin in the regional startup ecosystem
• International Startup Community: knowledge and people transfer between partner universities to support the regional network.

“We create the framework conditions under which creative startup teams can develop well together with established companies, and thus offer a crystallization point for knowledge transfer between academia and industry,” says Zaby.

2,000,000 Euros for Berlin Startup Scholarship Recipients

The teams from the last round of the Berlin Startup Scholarship have raised over 2 million in funding capital. “This is the highest funding amount achieved within our BSS calls to date,” says Christian Gurol, Head of the Startup Incubator at the Berlin School of Economics and Law.

Four of the eight graduating founder teams had developed their concept ideas in the Startup Now program of the Startup Incubator Berlin (short: SIB) and had qualified for funding through the Berlin Startup Scholarship (short: BSS).

This enabled them to further develop their business models to market readiness within six months using the Lean Startup methodology. Mathias Kuhlmann, advisor for the European Structural Fund at the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises, joins the Startup Incubator in celebrating the successes: “The fact that the startup teams here have the opportunity to develop their business model to market readiness over a total of up to 18 months across various programs, while already raising initial funding, demonstrates the value and benefit of the funding program.”

What makes the Lean methodology applied at SIB special is that it places the focus on early and continuous feedback from potential customers. Products are not first developed to completion and then offered on the market, but instead enter a development cycle: build – measure – learn. In addition to coaching, mentoring, and training offerings, the regular event formats UX Testing, Startup Dinner, and Co-Founder Matching are also considered valuable for the BSS teams at SIB. Peer learning between experienced and new teams also helped accelerate the teams’ development. At the end of the program, the graduating startups simultaneously take on a new role within the HWR Incubator community in the new Siemensstadt.

For example, Matchbase, the first on-demand football league as an app, and Wavy, which is renewing the yacht charter market as a kind of AirBnB for boats, are staying in close proximity to the incubator on site. The rental law startup Lawio is taking its next growth steps in Saxony-Anhalt, but remains part of the community, as do OTEK Bicycles and the green tech off-grid impact startup Suncrafter, who are pursuing their vision of supplying people without access to energy with solar power using recycled solar modules. The departure of some marks a new starting point for others. Homemade Studio, rvolt, My Help Buddy, Krenu, and Alvego have made the development leap from Startup Now to BSS. On March 22, 2019, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller, Siemens Board Member Cedrik Neike, the CEO of Siemens Real Estate, Dr. Zsolt Sluitner, and the President of the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin), Prof. Dr. Andreas Zaby, inaugurate the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt. The transformation of Siemensstadt into a new ecosystem connecting industry, startups, science, and research is taking shape.

Two years ago, the Berlin School of Economics and Law opened a new location for the Startup Incubator Berlin — the entrepreneurship center of HWR Berlin — on the corporate campus in Berlin-Siemensstadt. HWR Berlin and Siemens AG jointly created a network platform for the Berlin business community and startups to promote entrepreneurial thinking, providing space for the development of innovative business models and new approaches to current economic challenges.

In a former factory hall, the A32 Entrepreneurs Forum Berlin Siemensstadt was created — an entrepreneurship hub with modern co-working spaces, a large event area, laboratory, and workshop. Through fruitful cooperation between the Berlin business community, the Startup Incubator Berlin, and the other founding centers of Berlin’s universities of applied sciences united in the BIT6 network, key entrepreneurship activities from the academic environment are now concentrated in this forward-looking innovation center of Germany’s startup capital.
